Retire or Die?

Hi, I was just wondering what the general opinion was on letting your ala dogs die, or if people prefer to retire them..... I am asking because I have some dogs that are getting older, and though they are still in good health I know I will have to make the choice soon. Just looking to get others opinions on this :-)

well, currently I still trail all of my dogs, even if they are getting older. Thank you both for the feedback, I now feel that I will retire my dogs when their health starts to decline. I appreciate your input!

I spent two minutes trying to figure out when I posted only to realize it was an April Fools name swap post. xD

I used let my favorite dogs die naturally in case I wanted to use a rebirth down the line, but now that there's an item to reverse retirement, I've been favoring that. For my higher TP trial dogs (and fillers until recently), I retire them after they age out of trialing at 240 months. For dogs I really like but are just pretty, I may wait until around the 200 benchmark. For dogs that were mostly stepping stones in my line, I may retire as early as 130 months depending on if I need kennel space. I also practice retiring ugly pups from litters. I try to sell first in case someone has different tastes, then I retire after a few days.

Also, you should also be able to visit retired/dead dogs by looking up the tag the dog had. :) Or in lineages. So don't feel like you'll never be able to find a dog again if it's not in your "dogs died in care" section.

I retire around 200months or when I get the 1st low health message. Or when I stop really using the dog to breed or show.

So if you retire, when do you choose to do so? I know their health will start to deteriorate, is that a good warning? Or do you do it prior to that happening? Thanks again for the input!

I tend to retire so that I get that $250 rather than them just dieing. If I've bred teh dog I can still visit them by searching dogs with my tag on them. Or i can save their link in my favorites and visit them that way.

And all your items are returned to your inventory when they die or you retire them, some will appear to have stayed on them but its just cashed in the image memory.

thank you for the reply. I was thinking one of the nice things about letting your dogs live out their lives is that you can still see and visit them in the "dogs died in care". I have been leaning towards just letting them go on their own when they reach a age.
I understand and agree with the retiring other dogs, and plan on doing that in exactly the cases you talked about.
Also, forgot to ask, when you retire or a dog dies, do they take their items and backgrounds with them?

I do both. I don't believe in applying morality to pixel dogs (though I know other users have opposing opinions on that).
If I get tired of a lower TP dog, I will try and sell it. If it doesn't sell in the timeframe that I'd like, I retire it and I retire pups I don't like.
The only reason I'd ever keep an older dog that I don't want around (I have a couple of these right now) would be as a holder for Baby Griffins/Confused Storks.
